State Sprint Champion Signs With Nebraska

Nikywa Prevost of Valley College, the defending state junior college champion in the women’s 200 meters, has signed a letter of intent with the University of Nebraska.

Prevost, a 1988 graduate of San Fernando High, has personal bests of 11.7 seconds in the 100 and 23.8 in the 200. She placed second in the 100 in last year’s state championships.

She won the 100 and placed second in the 200 behind Ventura’s Simone Cain in the Western State Conference meet in Bakersfield last Friday.

Tom Kelly and Steve Valenzuela, College of the Canyons’ starting guards, have selected four-year schools. Kelly has orally committed to Azusa Pacific and Valenzuela has signed a letter of intent to attend Cal Poly Pomona on a partial scholarship, Canyons assistant coach Jeff Dunlap said.

Valenzuela, a 6-foot-2 sophomore shooting guard from Hart High, averaged 13.7 points despite being hampered by an ankle injury. Kelly, a 5-9 sophomore guard from Burroughs, averaged 5.8 assists.

Greg McNeil of Ojai and Thurlow Rogers of Van Nuys are among 133 cyclists entered in the second Tour de Trump, which begins today with a 3.1-mile prologue time trial in Wilmington, Del.

McNeil, 22, finished third in the 100-mile road race in last year’s national championships. Rogers, 30, was a gold medalist in the 1983 Pan American Games and placed sixth in the 1984 Olympic road race.

The field of eight professional and 11 amateur teams includes reigning Tour de France champion Greg LeMond and defending champion Dag-Otto Lauritzen of Norway.

The Tour de Trump is the richest cycling race in U. S. history, offering more than $300,000 in cash and prizes. The 11-day, 1,107-mile race through Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York and Massachusetts concludes May 13 in Boston. Portions of the race will be televised by NBC on May 5-6 and 12-13.
