California IN BRIEF : THERMAL : Winds Fan Fire Over 850 Acres

A fire pushed by gusty winds scorched 850 acres of brush and threatened a small apartment complex before firefighters contained it. The fire caused about $25,000 in damage to telephone poles and equipment owned by General Telephone. Fire officials said they initially expected to contain the blaze to 10 acres, but winds gusting up to 15 m.p.h. spread the flames, and reinforcements were called in.
