FREEWAY LEAGUE MEET : Team Titles Go to Sunny Hills Boys and Sonora Girls

Sunny Hills High School’s boys and Sonora High’s girls won the Freeway League track and field championships Thursday at Fullerton College.

The La Habra boys’ team won the league final meet with 128 points, but Sunny Hills, which placed second in the meet with 108, was awarded the championship because it had the best record in dual meets.

Buena Park finished third (83), Troy fourth (75), Fullerton fifth (44) and Sonora sixth (22).

Sunny Hills’ Mike Sullivan won the 200 in 22.3, which ties his Freeway League record set Tuesday, and the long jump (22 feet 6 inches). Teammate Mark Brown set a league record in the 100 (10.8).

La Habra and Buena Park (third place) entered the 1,600 tied for first place with 57 points, but Highlanders Tim Mahon, Jim Mahon and Roberto Romero finished first, second and fourth, respectively, to pull ahead with 77 points. La Habra never trailed the remainder of the meet.

Malcolm King won the 400 (51.2) and the 300 hurdles (41.2) for Buena Park. The Coyotes also won both relays; the 400 in 44.4 and the 1,600 in 3:30.8.

Sonora’s girls won the championship with the best dual meet record and 134 points in the finals. Sunny Hills placed second (118), Troy third (72), Fullerton fourth (48), La Habra fifth (47) and Buena Park sixth (42).

Sonora’s Casie Lozano won the 100 (12.3) and the 200 (25.9). Sonora also won the 400 relay (50.3) and the 1,600 relay (4:16.7).

Fullerton’s Gisela Lopez and Sommer McLane each won two events. Lopez won the 3,200 (12:09.0) and the 800 (2:32.9). McLane won the shotput (35-5 3/4) and the discus (97-4 1/4).

Sunny Hills’ Danielle Brown also won two events: the long jump (17-5 1/4) and the triple jump (36-7 1/4).
