COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Studebaker, Hall Advance

Four singles players and two doubles teams from Moorpark College advanced into the quarterfinals of the Western State Conference men’s individual tennis championships Friday at Moorpark.

Fifth-seeded Mike Studebaker led Moorpark, qualifying in singles and advancing with fellow singles qualifier Derek Hall in doubles. Moorpark’s Jeff Walendy and Andrew Van Cott also advanced in singles and as a doubles team.

Pierce’s Al Martinez, one of two No. 1-seeded players, and teammate Vince Brandt advanced into the round of 16 as did Glendale’s Dun Cao and Ventura’s Brant Brazill.

Singles and doubles quarterfinalists qualify for the Southern California regionals of the state championships.

In the WSC women’s championships at Santa Barbara College, Moorpark’s Elise Nakawatase posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Gina Montion of Ventura to advance to the quarterfinals in singles.

Elise and her mother, Patti, won their doubles match as did Moorpark’s Cathleen Clark and Amy Perry to earn spots in the quarterfinals.

Glendale placed two players, Genoveva Guba and Claudia Boumann, in the round of 16, and the doubles team of Boumann and Tracy Fabian in the final eight.

BASEBALL

Southern California College 7, Cal Lutheran 6--Down, 6-4, in the sixth inning, host Southern California College scored three runs on five walks and a hit batter to win the NAIA District 3 game.
