OLYMPIC LEAGUE MEET : Whittier Christian Leads Qualifying

Share

Whittier Christian High School already had won its fifth Olympic League boys’ track championship in the past eight seasons.

And the Heralds had wrapped up an undefeated season of league competition last week.

So all that was left to do at Friday’s league finals at Fullerton College was to qualify as many as possible for next Saturday’s 1-A prelims at Arcadia High.

Whittier Christian qualified nine individuals and its 400 and 1,600 relay teams. Santa Margarita also qualified nine individuals but neither of its relay teams.

Tony Bergman of Whittier Christian won the 800 in 2 minutes 02.93 seconds, the 1,600 in 4:36.68 and the 3,200 in 10:21.02. Brethren’s Chiron Hart finished first in the 200, long jump and triple jump.

In the girls’ competition, Santa Margarita qualified a meet-high 16 individuals and both relay teams, and Orange Lutheran qualified nine individuals and its relay teams.

The Santa Margarita girls’ team had three first-place finishes, including Brooke Gammel’s victory in the 1,600, which was swept by the Eagles.

Orange Lutheran’s Kara Stephens won the discus (101 feet 3 1/2 inches), Kara Theis won the triple jump (34-10) and Renee Wright won the 300 hurdles (48.70) and 100 hurdles (15.37).
