SDSU Plans Varsity Wrestling

Share

The San Diego State wrestling team, which currently exists as a club sport, has received a sizable donation and a corporate sponsor, enough to upgrade the team to varsity status and allow for a Division I schedule.

Wrestling, dropped from SDSU nine years ago, was organized into a club in 1989 by seniors Andy Peterson and Fran McGrath.

As long as the club complies with NCAA requirements and receives certification like any varsity team, it can compete at the Division I level. Arrangements are being made for SDSU wrestling to compete in the Western Athletic Conference.

The Amateur Sports Training Center of Fountain Valley, headed by James Remmey, has committed a $120,000 donation to the club. Dixieline Lumber and its president Bill Cowling, a 1951 SDSU graduate and former Aztec wrestler, will donate equipment and wrestling mats.
