PREP BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Big Rally Gets La Quinta Past Los Amigos

La Quinta High School scored 10 runs in the final two innings to defeat Los Amigos, 11-10, in a Garden Grove League baseball Tuesday at La Quinta.

La Quinta (18-8, 10-3) trailed, 10-1, entering the bottom of the sixth. Don Hopkins hit a two-run double and Duane Gleason hit a three-run homer to key La Quinta’s seven-run sixth inning. In the seventh, Hopkins had a RBI single to cut the deficit to 10-9. He and took third on Ken Granger’s run-scoring double that tied the score. Anthony Beltran hit to short on a hit-and-run where the shortstop bobbled the ball, allowing Hopkins to score the winning run.

Los Amigos’ John Morgan hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning and hit a solo home run in the fourth.

In other Garden Grove League games:

Santiago 6, Bolsa Grande 5--Santiago (16-7, 10-3) rallied from a four-run deficit for the victory at home.

Bolsa Grande led, 5-1, after four innings, but Santiago scored four in the fifth to tie it.

Marco Perez gave the Cavaliers the lead with a RBI single in the sixth. Rick Tantardini had a home run and two doubles, driving in four runs, for Bolsa Grande.

Kennedy 6, Garden Grove 3--Devin Underwood had three hits, scored and drove in a run to lead host Kennedy (14-9, 9-4).

In Academy League baseball:

Liberty Christian 10, Cal Lutheran 1--Chris Buckels struck out 12 and had three hits and an RBI as Liberty Christian (17-4, 9-0) clinched its second consecutive league title.

In the Century League:

Villa Park 4, Santa Ana 3--Mike Stephens’ two-run single with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the seventh led Villa Park. Jason Mardian batted in the first run of the three-run rally in the seventh. Villa Park’s Todd Blyleven (8-2) struck out seven.

Santa Ana Valley 7, El Modena 3--Scott Crosby pitched a seven-hitter and allowed one earned run to lead Santa Ana Valley. He also hit a three-run homer in the first inning and a two-run single in the fifth for Santa Ana Valley (10-14, 4-10). Cesar Ruiz had two hits, Jose Arroyo had two hits and Jose Sandoval had two hits for host Valley (10-14, 4-10).

Canyon 3, Foothill 2 (9 innings)--Canyon (12-11-1, 10-3-1) second baseman Bob Thompson singled in the winning run in the ninth to clinch the league championship. Canyon was trailing 2-1 in the top of the seventh inning when Thompson doubled to left field and scored from second base on a broken-play pickoff attempt.

In the Empire League:

Katella 4, El Dorado 2--Brandon Farley hit a solo home run in the fourth inning and Brian Franklin hit a solo home run in the second inning to lead visiting Katella.

Esperanza 5, Los Alamitos 2--Joe Foss (6-1) scattered six hits in 5 1/3 innings for the victory and Shade Summers pitch 1 2/3 innings of hitless relief for the save to lead Esperanza (19-5, 13-1).

In the Express League:

Pioneer Baptist 11, Garden Grove Claremont 1--Kevin Knudson threw a two-hitter to lead host Pioneer Baptist (17-2, 9-0) over Claremont (14-3, 6-3).

In the Olympic League:

Orange Lutheran 15, Whitney 5--Todd Dudley hit a grand slam, a double, and a single for Orange Lutheran (17-6, 11-2) at Whitney (8-10, 5-8).

Santa Margarita 21, Capistrano Valley Christian 4--Danny Bartlett hit two three-run home runs to pace visiting Santa Margarita (8-11, 5-8). In the Pacific Coast League:

Orange 7, Trabuco Hills 3--Richard Prater had two hits and four RBIs to lead host Orange (15-9, 10-4).

Laguna Hills 4, Woodbridge 3--Matt Maffei’s two-run single gave the Hawks (18-7, 13-1) the victory at Woodbridge. The Warriors led, 3-1, after six innings, but the Hawks loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh. After Jason Pearson walked to force in a run, Maffei singled to right. Kevin Lovingier (13-1) pitched a five-hitter, striking out five, for the victory.

Laguna Beach 8, Costa Mesa 2--Pitcher Clark Harman struck out 10 in a complete-game victory for Laguna Beach (6-16, 5-9). Visiting Laguna Beach used a four-run fourth inning to take a 5-2 lead. Aaron Scheid had three hits two RBIs for Laguna Beach. David Crain add two hits and one RBI.

In the Sea View League:

Estancia 3, Corona del Mar 0--Greg Brannis pitched a four-hitter for host Estancia (15-9, 7-7). Brannis (9-5) struck out four and walked only one. Ruben Mora had two hits, including a double, and scored a run for the Eagles.

Tustin 4, Saddleback 1--Reliever Ben Munoz of visiting Tustin (21-3, 13-1) replaced injured starting pitcher Bill Courtney and pitched 5 2/3 innings for the victory. Munoz (3-1) also doubled twice and drove in the winning run in the seventh.

In the Sunset League:

Ocean View 5, Edison 4--With the game tied at 4-4 in the sixth, Curtis Bruce walked with one out, stole second and third base and then scored on a passed ball for Ocean View (18-7, 12-2).
