COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : OCC Edges Golden West in Softball

Orange Coast College, aided by two errors and a walk, scored in the first inning for a 1-0 victory over Golden West in a Southern California Regional softball playoff game Saturday at OCC.

Kristin Heizer pitched a one-hitter to get the victory for OCC (33-11).

Golden West’s only hit was a single in the fourth by Sheri Williams.

Pam Fogg pitched a three-hitter for Golden West. The teams play today at noon in the second of their best-of-three series at OCC. Should Golden West win, another game will follow.

In another regional:

Cypress 8, Grossmont 2--Shortstop Tricia Barr had three hits and three runs batted in to pace host Cypress. Laura Corson (20-2) pitched a two-hitter for the Chargers (39-6). The teams play again at noon today at Cypress, and Grossmont (21-15) needs to win to extend the best-of-three series to a third game.

In the Southern California men’s tennis championships at College of the Desert:

Scott Hansen, an unseeded singles player from Saddleback, pulled off two upsets to advance to the semifinals. Hansen defeated No. 3 Tim Clark of Bakersfield, 6-1, 6-4, and No. 8 Nick Zinzmeister of Desert, 6-2, 4-6, 2-2 retired.

In the semifinals, Hansen will play top-seeded John Swaino of Cypress and Carl Hinds of Saddleback, who defeated Derek Hall of Moorpark, 6-0, 6-0, and Jon Imel of Long Beach, 6-3, 6-2, will play No. 2 Jon Fox of Santa Barbara.
