San Diego State Wins WAC Baseball Championship

San Diego State’s 28-6 victory over host Air Force Sunday, combined with Wyoming’s loss to Colorado State gave the Aztec baseball team the Western Athletic Conference championship.

With 28 runs the Aztecs (44-20, 21-7) broke the school record of 27 in a game which they set against Colorado State last weekend. SDSU also had 26 RBIs, which broke the school record of 24 set against Fresno State in 1983.

Jeff Barry went four for six with two doubles, a triple, three RBIs and three runs scored for SDSU. Teammate Brian Grabeck went three for four with four RBIs, five runs scored and a two-run homer.

Air Force finished 25-31, 6-18.

SDSU will play Hawaii in the first round of the WAC tournament at Hawaii on Thursday.

U.S. International lost a doubleheader to host Loyola Marymount. LMU, 43-13 and ranked eighth in the nation, won 10-4 and 10-2. Beto Rodriguez hit a home run (his 13th) in the first game and went two for four with two RBIs for USIU, 15-43-1.

MEN’S TENNIS

UC San Diego lost to DePauw, 5-1, in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament in Swarthmore, Penn. Senior Tim Ditzler defeated Kyle Gamble, 6-0, 6-1, for UCSD (12-11). UCSD will play St. John’s in the consolation bracket today.
