HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Top-Seeded Poway Wins Easily in 3-A Tennis

Top-seeded Poway won eight of nine singles matches and went on defeat visiting Patrick Henry, 13-5, in the quarterfinals of the San Diego Section 3-A boy’s tennis team championships.

Jeff Alvarez and Rick Spooner swept their singles matches, 6-0, 6-2, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-1, 6-0, to lead Poway (17-2).

In other 3-A matches:

Hilltop 10, Torrey Pines 8--Unseeded Hilltop will play Poway in the semifinals today at 3 p.m. at Rancho Arbolitos Tennis Club.

Mt. Carmel 15, Monte Vista 3--Second-seeded Mt. Carmel won easily and will play host to Mira Mesa in the semifinals.

Mira Mesa 13, Orange Glen 5--Darin McDonald swept his singles matches, 6-2, 6-3 and 6-1, and the team of Ramom Guillot and Tom Koenig swept the doubles, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2, to lead No. 3 Mira Mesa at home. The Marauders will play at Mt. Carmel today in the semifinals.

2-A Tennis Quarterfinals

La Jolla 17, La Jolla Country 1--Top-seeded La Jolla will play host to USDHS in today’s semifinals.

USDHS 9, Valhalla 9--The two teams tied in sets, but USDHS advanced by winning 90 games to Valhalla’s 80.

San Pasqual 12, Bishop’s 6--Eric Tebbs swept at No. 1 singles for San Pasqual, 6-2, 6-3, 6-1. San Pasqual is 20-2.

St. Augustine 15, Vincent Memorial 3--No. 3-seed St. Augustine will play at No. 2 San Pasqual.

Golf

Tim Hart of Torrey Pines shot a 69 and leads three others by two shots in the section individual tournament on the Singings Hills Oak Glen course. Travis Williams of San Dieguito, Michael Heath of Mt. Carmel and Chris Riley of Madison are tied for second at 71. Brian Smock is another shot back in fifth.

The final round is today beginning at 6:40 a.m. on the Singing Hills Willow Glen course.

Badminton

Top-seeded Chris Hansen of University City advanced to the semifinals, but No. 2-seeded Danny Huynh of Hoover was upset in the boys’ singles division of the section individual tournament at Serra High. In the girls’ singles tournament, No. 1-seeded Nhu Truong of Serra was an easy winner.
