DIGEST : Hampton, Rast to Be Feted by Soccer Group

All-American midfielder Craig Hampton of Simi Valley High and former Royal standout Cam Rast will be honored at the Simi Valley Soccer Foundation’s inaugural “Celebration of Excellence” dinner at Royal High on June 9.

Rast is an NCAA All-American under Santa Clara soccer Coach Steve Sampson, who will be the keynote speaker.

Ken Wagner and his Moorpark College baseball staff will conduct a series of youth and adult baseball camps this summer.

The first session, June 25-29, is for children aged 8 to 10. The July 9-13 session is for 11- to 13-year-olds. The July 16-20 camp will include high school-aged players, and the final session, July 27-29, is open to those 30 and older.

Participants will receive T-shirts and videos.

Todd Rawthorne, a punter for Moorpark College in 1987 and 1988, will attend Western Michigan on an athletic scholarship, Moorpark football Coach Jim Bittner said.

Rawthorne, a two-year starter, will join Jeff Lujan and Scott Yurek, both of whom played for Moorpark last season, at Western Michigan.

Kicker Kevin Green, a Simi Valley High graduate who played football for two years at Moorpark, will have a tryout with the New York Jets, Bittner said.

Green played for Syracuse in 1987 and 1988.

The Ventura County Junior Tennis Assn. will hold its annual banquet June 9 at the Wedgewood Banquet Center in Ventura.

Registration for the American Roundball Corp. volleyball summer league for boys grades 8-12 will be held June 3 at 1 p.m. at North Hollywood High.
