BASEBALL / SOUTHERN SECTION FINALS : Montclair Prep, Rosamond Win

Van Nuys Montclair Prep (25-3) took a 7-0 lead in the top of the third inning and rode it to a 14-4 victory over Sun Valley Village Christian and the CIF Southern Section 1-A Division baseball championship Friday at Blair Field in Long Beach.

With the bases loaded and no outs, Montclair Prep second baseman Shad Knighton drove in two runs with a single to center. Center fielder Leland Sparks singled to reload the bases. Three more runs scored on left fielder J. T. Billingslea’s single and a throwing error by pitcher Matt Bates. An RBI double by right fielder Robo Feldman capped the scoring.

Sun Valley Christian (18-7) threatened in the bottom of the second inning when it loaded the bases with two outs, but Kevin Grant struck out the last batter.

Matt Henzie scored an unearned run in the third inning for Village Christian to make the score 7-1, but the Mounties added five more runs in the fifth inning to put the game away.

Van Nuys Montclair Prep was the Alpha League champion. Sun Valley Village Christian was a wild-card team from the Alpha League.

Rosamond 4, Boron 2--In the Small Schools Division, the defending champion Roadrunners (25-2) defeated their Desert-Inyo Small Schools Division rival for the third time this season.

Boron took the lead in the second inning when sophomore pitcher Steve Rowley doubled to right field with two outs to drive in Jason Blevins.

In the third inning, the first three Boron batters reached base, but Rosamond’s Patrick Jackson struck out the next two hitters, and Jason Aduddell was tagged at home when he tried to score on a botched squeeze play.

First baseman Mark Hartman relieved Jackson in the fourth inning and struck out seven batters to get the victory.

Rosamond scored twice in the third inning when Jason King doubled to drive in Jose DeLaRosa. King took third on a single by Hartman and then came home on catcher Rudy Sarmiento’s bunt.

The Bobcats (22-5) tied the score in the fourth inning, but Rosamond regained the lead in the fifth when King drove in DeLaRosa from third with a single.

The Roadrunners added another run in the sixth when Anthony Ramos scored on a single by DeLaRosa.
