SOFTBALL SOUTHERN SECTION CHAMPIONSHIPS : Marina Wins 5-A Title With Run in Ninth
Marina High School of Huntington Beach scored on an error in the bottom of the ninth inning for a 1-0 victory and the Southern Section 5-A softball championship at Mayfair Park in Lakewood Saturday night.
Catcher Christa Yorke led off with single, went to second base on a groundball and took third on a wild pitch. Janet Miyahara hit a shot to center fielder Erin Mutch, who dropped the ball, allowing Yorke to score.
Marina’s Miyahara (16-1) got the victory as the Vikings improved to 28-5. Newbury Park ended the season 24-8.
Outstanding defensive plays by both teams prevented runs from scoring.
Newbury Park’s Lynn Anderson ripped a high liner up the middle with two on base in the fifth inning, but second baseman Julie Muche made a running back hand overhead stab to save a hit.
Melody Bolger’s running catch saved a Marina run in the fifth inning.
