THE SIDELINES : Bass NBA Executive of the Year
Bob Bass, whose wheeling and dealing brought the San Antonio Spurs 10 new players and a record-setting season, has been named NBA Executive of the Year.
Team officials from throughout the NBA vote on the Executive of the Year award. Bass received 24 votes, followed by Jerry West of the Lakers with 18. John Nash of the Philadelphia 76ers was third with seven votes.
The NBA-sanctioned award comes after a season in which the Spurs captured the Midwest Division title, set a league record for the best single-season improvement and a franchise record for most victories. The Spurs’ regular season record of 56-26 was a 35-game improvement over their 21-61 finish in 1988-89.
San Antonio defeated the Denver Nuggets in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs, then forced their semifinal round to seven games before losing in overtime to the Portland Trail Blazers.
