PREP NOTES : Katella Players Lead East in Anaheim All-Star Choices

Katella High School had eight players selected to the East team that will participate in the third Anaheim Union High School District all-star baseball game scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday in Anaheim’s Glover Stadium.

Brandon Farley, Katella’s all-county first baseman, leads the East team, and all-county pitcher Chad Phillips of Magnolia will lead the West team.

Rob Megill will coach the East, which includes players from Anaheim, Katella, Loara and Savanna. Don Rayl of Cypress will coach the West, which includes players from Cypress, Kennedy, Magnolia and Western.

The all-star squads:

WEST

Pitchers: Ray Bridges (Cypress), John Homan (Cypress), Robert Legendre (Western), Chad Phillips (Magnolia) and John Straits (Magnolia).

Catcher: David Dzurilla (Cypress) and Ron Mason (Magnolia).

Infielders: Eric Dowell (Western), Mauricio Hernandez (Magnolia), Robert Prince (Cypress), Craig Roah (Kennedy) and Rob Sandoval (Magnolia).

Outfielders: Abby Gomez (Cypress), Steve Lundby (Kennedy), Todd Murakami (Kennedy), Eric Nygard (Western), Ed Serrano (Western), Kevin Smith (Cypress) and Will Villalobos (Kennedy).

EAST

Marina High School, featuring Cherokee Parks, a first-team All-American selection by Parade Magazine, is favored to win the Capistrano Valley summer basketball tournament, which begins June 22 in the school’s gymnasium.

The championship game is scheduled for 6 p.m. June 23.

The first-round pairings for June 22:

10:30 a.m.--Marina vs. Dana Hills; noon--Trabuco Hills vs. Foothill; 1:30 p.m.--Fountain Valley vs. San Clemente; 3 p.m.--Capistrano Valley vs. Newport Harbor.

Mater Dei High School, the defending Division I state basketball champion, is favored to win the South Coast Summer Beach tournament, July 5-7 at Capistrano Beach park.

Mater Dei graduated all of its starters but returns reserve center Mark Moneypenny and reserve point guard Reggie Geary. Coach Gary McKnight will have seven underclassmen on his squad.

The championship game is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. July 7 at the beach court.

The first-round pairings:

At Dana Hills: 10 a.m.--Live Oak vs. Irvine.

At Capistrano Beach park: 9 a.m.--Capistrano Valley vs. Anaheim; 10:15--Western vs. Trabuco Hills; 11:30--Dana Hills vs. Fallbrook; 12:45 p.m.--San Clemente vs. Antioch; 2--Newport Harbor vs. Clovis West; 3:15--Mater Dei vs. Ceres; 4:30--San Dieguito vs. Tracy.
