Servite Tournament Set for July 12-15

Cherokee Parks of Marina High School, Tes Whitlock of Loara and John McWilliams of Pomona, three of the top returning prep players in the state, are among those scheduled to play in the Servite summer basketball tournament July 12-15 in the Friars’ gymnasium.

Parks, a 6-foot-11 center, was named a first-team Parade Magazine All-American after averaging 22.1 points and 13.4 rebounds a game in leading Marina to the Sunset League title.

Whitlock, a guard, was the county’s second-leading scorer as a junior, averaging 29.8 points per game with a high game of 54 points against Los Alamitos in an Empire League game.

McWilliams, a forward, was an all-Southern Section selection as a sophomore and junior, averaging 24 points per game as a sophomore and 23.5 points as a junior.

Marina is the top-seeded team in the 16-team tournament and the defending champion is Long Beach Poly. Perennial power Mater Dei declined to enter this year.
