Multi-Vehicle Accident Kills 1, Injures Others

Share

A multi-vehicle wreck killed a motorist, injured four others and closed most lanes of the Pomona Freeway for several hours during Thursday morning’s rush period, officials said.

A tractor-trailer rig knocked a car to one side, critically injuring its driver. Another car was trapped under the truck and exploded into flames. The identity of the dead motorist was not immediately known.

Five fire companies and a helicopter went to the scene. Firefighters spent an hour extinguishing the fire and three hours trying to pull the driver’s body from the burned car, said Inspector John Lenihan of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Four other cars plowed into the wreckage, causing minor injuries to three of the drivers.

The driver of the Consolidated Freightways truck was unhurt.

Four westbound and two eastbound lanes were closed for about four hours, CHP Officer Harold Daily said.
