A car struck a second auto that turned in front of it in Newhall on Saturday, killing a 97-year-old woman in the first car and injuring three others, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reported.

The name of the dead woman, who lived in La Crescenta, was not released because her relatives had not been notified. She died of head injuries at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital.

The woman was a passenger in a car driven by Elizabeth Russell, 69, also of La Crescenta, who suffered moderate injuries in the 3:35 p.m. collision at Sierra Highway and San Fernando Road, said Lt. Tim Peters of the Santa Clarita sheriff’s station.

The driver of the second car, Abraham De Jesus Herta, 43, and his passenger, Alberto Marin, both of Newhall, also suffered moderate injuries and were treated at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, Peters said.

Peters said Herta was driving north on Sierra Highway when he began a left turn onto San Fernando Road and collided with Russell’s car, which was southbound on Sierra Highway. Herta was cited on suspicion of failing to yield, Peters said.
