USD’s Mattera, Brille All-Academic

University of San Diego seniors Dan Mattera and Michael Brille were named third-team All-Academic Thursday by the Sports Information Directors of America.

Mattera, a four-year performer in men’s tennis, graduated this spring with a 3.79 grade-point average in business administration. Brille, a three-year performer in men’s soccer, graduated with a 3.83 GPA in business.

Rob Machado of Cardiff and Rick Irons of Ocean Beach were among those advancing through further qualifying rounds at the $50,000 Miller Loop Surf Classic at the Oceanside Pier.

Machado and Irons will compete in today’s fourth round, which begins at 7:30 a.m.
