Boxing promoter Bob Arum testified that Steve Wynn was confident he could buy off Don King and get Buster Douglas’ first heavyweight title defense against Evander Holyfield at Wynn’s Mirage hotel-casino in Las Vegas.

Arum gave his testimony at the New York trial of King’s breach-of-contract suit against Douglas, John Johnson, his manager, and the Mirage.

Arum said that when he asked Wynn about King’s promotional contract with Douglas during a meeting at the Mirage, Wynn replied: “We sign Douglas, King can be bought off. We can pay King money and we can hold the fight.”

An Associated Press source said an out-of-court agreement is being considered to cut King in on the Douglas-Holyfied bout at the Mirage.

Douglas and Johnson have signed a contract with Wynn for $25 million for a Douglas-Holyfield bout and $35 million for a Douglas-Tyson rematch on the condition King’s contract is voided.

Since then, Dan Duva, who promotes Holyfield, went to court to force the World Boxing Assn., whose mandatory heavyweight title defense is due, to call for purse bids. The Mirage won the purse bid for $32.1 million, but that could be nullified should King win his suit.
