Hometown favorite Mike Lambresi of Oceanside was among 16 surfers to move into the main event of the $112,500 Life’s A Beach Surf Tournament on the last day of qualifying rounds at Oceanside Pier. Wild card seed Colin Smith of Solana Beach is the only other area surfer to compete in today’s first-round main event, where three-time U.S. tour champion Lambresi will face Australia’s Ross Clarke-Jones and Smith will face Hawaii’s John Shimooka. It is the largest summer event on the 1990 Association of Surfing Professionals World Tour.

In the Take Cover Women’s Cup Trials, Tricia Gill of Encinitas and Lisa Carulli of San Diego were among eight surfers to advance to today’s last qualifying round. In the Jose Cuervo Longboard Challenge, Joel Tudor of Pacific Beach won his heat to advance to today’s third round.
