Kanim Joins Women’s Volleyball Staff at CS Northridge

Mora Kanim has been hired as an assistant coach of the Cal State Northridge women’s volleyball team.

Kanim, a member of the 1984 UCLA team that won the NCAA Division I title, was the volleyball coach at Marymount High from 1987-89.

Kanim graduated from UCLA in 1988 and coached the Zuma Bay Volleyball Club for the past two years in conjunction with Northridge Coach Walt Ker.

The Lady Matadors, NCAA Division II champions in 1980, ’83 and ‘87, will begin their first season at the Division I level in the Sun Devil Labor Day Challenge at Arizona State, Aug. 31.

Roger Evans has been hired as the girls’ cross-country and track coach at Simi Valley High.

Evans, an assistant track coach at Simi Valley for the past two years, will replace Tom King, who was hired as the boys’ track coach at Buena after coaching the Pioneer boys’ and girls’ cross-country and track teams from 1986-90.

Roz Goldenberg, boys’ basketball coach at Oakwood School, is a finalist for the women’s basketball coaching job at Long Beach City College. Goldenberg will interview again for the job and a decision is expected within two weeks.

Goldenberg has coached at Oakwood for eight years and has spent the past six as the boys’ coach. The Gorillas placed fourth in the Liberty League last season with a 6-6 record.

Goldenberg’s best season was 1987-88, when the team finished 21-6 and won the school’s only Southern Section title, a Small Schools championship.

Four area women volleyball players have announced that they will play next season at Antelope Valley College.

Kerry French and Zoe Darrington of Palmdale High, Becky Morgan of Antelope Valley and Heidi Roarty of Quartz Hill have agreed to play for the Antelopes, according to Coach Jane Cwayna.

French, Morgan and Roarty were All-Golden League selections last season.

Cal Lutheran’s undergraduate athletic training program recently was accredited by the National Athletic Trainers Assn. Inc. for the next five years.

The program, begun in 1986, grants degrees in athletic training. Students in the program now will be accorded certified status when they receive their degrees.
