THE SIDELINES : Coach Mackey Pleads Innocent
Cleveland State basketball Coach Kevin Mackey pleaded innocent today to misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence and consuming an alcoholic beverage in a motor vehicle.
Mackey, 43, appeared with his lawyer, David Roth, before Cleveland Municipal Judge Carl B. Stokes. Mackey made no comment during the arraignment or when confronted by reporters before and after the court appearance.
Roth, however, said Mackey hopes to overcome a problem and stay on as the university’s basketball coach. Roth would not specify the problem.
“We all learn from our mistakes. We all are capable of bad judgment. The point is he’s not running away from the fact that he has a problem,” Roth said.
