Gross Advances to Racquetball Semifinals, 15-4, 15-7

Racquetball form prevailed in Canoga Park on Saturday as the three top-seeded players, vying for the $500 first prize in the men’s open division, moved into the semifinals of the Summer Shootout at Sequoia Club/Racquetball World.

Sherman Oaks’ Andy Gross, seeded No. 1, made quick work of Eric Wang of Chatsworth, 15-4, 15-7, and will face Dave Genevae of Yorba Linda this morning at 11. Genevae defeated Dave Owen of Studio City, 15-11, 15-9.

Second-seeded Ed Andrews of Huntington Beach struggled against Anthony Buccino of West Hills. Buccino took the first game, 14-15, before the veteran Andrews rallied to win the second, 15-2, and the tiebreaker, 11-4.

Andrews will play Mark Silva of West Hills in another 11 a.m. semifinal match. Silva, seeded No. 3, came from behind and outlasted Gabe Astalos of Sherman Oaks in a tiebreaker, 8-15, 15-3, 11-7.
