A fire suspected to be arson blackened about 20 acres of brush in the Santa Clarita Valley Sunday, but firefighters contained the blaze before it reached several nearby homes, authorities said.

There were no reports of injuries and no residents were evacuated.

Two teen-agers were detained by sheriff’s deputies shortly after the fire near San Fernando Road and Valle del Oro was reported at about 4:45 p.m., said Assistant Chief Leon Provost of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

A 17-year-old from North Hollywood and a 15-year-old from Lancaster were released to the custody of their parents, said Los Angeles County Sheriff Sgt. Michael Watner.

Provost said the teen-agers, whose names were not released because of their age, were seen leaving the site where the fire broke out behind Shady Mobile Home Park.

Several large houses in Placerita Canyon were threatened by the flames, but about 235 firefighters had contained the fire by 6 p.m. Provost said about 100 firefighters would remain until late Sunday night to extinguish hot spots.
