Two men remained in jail Sunday after allegedly firing at police during a chase through East San Diego.

Douglas Cannon, 35, and Robert Delang, 30, whose addresses were not available, were being held in the County Jail downtown on suspicion of attempted murder.

Officers Ray Stachnik, 31, and James Stevens, 31, tried to stop a car for a routine traffic violation at 10:52 p.m. Saturday at University Avenue and 42nd Street, but the car fled and its occupants fired several shots at the officers, who returned the fire, police said.

The fleeing car crashed into a parked car in the 5000 block of 35th Street near East Mountain View Drive and its driver and passenger were arrested when they tried to escape on foot, police said.

Cannon was wounded in the hand and was treated at UC San Diego Medical Center.

Stachnik and Stevens, who have been on the force for eight and 10 years, respectively, were not injured.

Police recovered a 9-millimeter handgun with an extended magazine.
