The Orange International Street Fair opened Friday night with an around-the-world cultural repertoire--from belly dancing to bluegrass--that attracted more than 70,000 people.

More than 90 groups are sponsoring food stands at the 18th annual street fair, which runs through Sunday night in downtown Orange.

The cuisine includes German, Turkish, Italian, Irish, Mexican, Japanese, Greek and other international fare.

The fair’s eight stages are featuring bands playing all varieties of ethnic music, including mariachi bands, jazz, oompah bands and Greek music.

Artisans at 80 stands are selling handmade items.

“There are about 70,000 people there now, and they’re still pouring in like the flood,” Orange Police Sgt. Jim Anderson said at 7 p.m. Friday. “It’s a good time, and it’s just beginning.”

Fair hours are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Youngsters who attend can be photographed with members of the Orange Fire Department at Children’s Village in Plaza Circle, and Police Department officials will take children’s fingerprints free of charge.
