THE SIDELINES : Cards Activate Pitcher Smith

ST. LOUIS —
Right-hander Bryn Smith, who hasn’t pitched since July 27 because of shoulder problems, was activated today by the St. Louis Cardinals.
Smith, 7-8 with a 4.50 ERA, threw about 60 pitches in a simulated game Wednesday. Manager Joe Torre said Smith, who signed a three-year, $6-million free agent contract with the Cardinals during the off-season, may start next Wednesday at Philadelphia.
