Police and the county medical examiner’s office are trying to determine if a 92-year-old North Park woman died early Monday morning from wounds inflicted during a beating.

Esther Burnett of the 4800 block of Idaho Street was taken to Hillside Hospital from her home Sunday night, police said. There, she told police that she had been beaten on her face and chest by a family member, said police spokesman Bill Robinson.

“There was evidence of bruising on the victim,” Robinson said.

When she talked with them at 8:45 p.m., her condition was not considered life-threatening, but she died about 3 1/2 hours later. An autopsy scheduled for today will determine if she died from those or unrelated causes, Robinson said.

Homicide detectives have interviewed members of her family.

“Basically, we’re handling it as a death investigation,” San Diego Police Lt. Paul Ybarrondo said. “We’re not calling it a homicide at this point.”
