Gov. George Deukmejian announced the selection today of four projects to become California’s first toll roads, including two projects in Orange County, one in San Diego County near the Mexican border and one in Contra Costa County.

The four projects would all be constructed with private funds, with the state and developers negotiating the tolls before construction begins. Bob Best, the director of the state Department of Transportation, told a news conference today that he expected tolls to run between 10 cents and 20 cents per mile.

The two Orange County projects are an 11-mile, $700-million, four-lane toll road roughly between Anaheim Stadium and the John Wayne Airport, and 10 miles of four extra toll lanes on the Route 91 freeway from State Route 55 to the Riverside County line, costing about $88.3 million.
