COLLEGE FOOTBALL REPORT : WEEKDAY UPDATE : SAN DIEGO STATE : Loss to Oregon Has Been Hard to Forget

Five days removed from the 42-21 debacle in Oregon, the Aztecs apparently still hadn’t returned to normal.

“We got a lot done (Thursday),” SDSU Coach Al Luginbill said, “but there are still some uptight people around here, and rightfully so. We still aren’t sure we’re where we need to be. I guess we’ll find out Saturday.”

Senior cornerback Clark Moses said he’s finding it hard to forget the 443-yard beating the secondary took from Oregon quarterback Bill Musgrave. “It’s hard not to think about it. It still lingers in the back of your mind. Moses, a two-year starter who for now has lost his job to senior Marlon Andrews, said Musgrave was one of the best quarterbacks he has faced.

“I would compare him to Dan McGwire. He doesn’t have the arm strength of Dan,” Moses said. “But he’s got a quick release, and he doesn’t get sacked. He also reads the defenses real well.”

The Aztecs’ opponent Saturday night, Long Beach State, has six San Diego players on its roster: defensive back Chris Comick (Hoover); running back Terrell Davis (Lincoln); wide receiver Jeff Exum (Helix); linebacker Greg Hollins (Lincoln), defensive back Earnest Johnson (Mission Bay) and running back Reggie Webb (Morse). . . . Gary Zauner, Cal State Long Beach’s special teams coach, will also be coming home. He served in the same capacity for the Aztecs from 1981 to 1985. . . . . For the second consecutive week, Barry Lamb, SDSU’s defensive coordinator, will be going against a former boss. Last week it was Oregon Coach Rich Brooks; this week, it’s Cal State Long Beach assistant Harvey Hyde. Lamb served under Hyde at University of Nevada-Las Vegas from 1982 to 1985, when Hyde was coach of the Rebels.
