Unlike top-seeded Henri Leconte, second-seeded Horst Skoff staved off defeat Friday, but Skoff had more on his mind than tennis at the Geneva Open in Switzerland.

Just before his match, Skoff was unpacking his bags from a car when, he said, the chauffeur backed the car into his left knee.

Skoff appeared OK, but, for him, the scene was all too reminiscent of an accident that threatened the career of his Austrian Davis Cup teammate, Thomas Muster.

Skoff defeated Renzo Furlan of Italy, 7-6 (7-1), 7-6 (7-3). During the first set, the Austrian requested medical attention for his knee. He also tried unsuccessfully to summon a lawyer. Court officials told him he would have to wait until after the match.

Leconte was upset by No. 146-ranked Michael Tauson of Denmark, 6-4, 6-3, in the quarterfinals. The Frenchman, ranked 22nd, said he was troubled by a stiff neck.

Michael Chang beat an ill Aaron Krickstein to advance to the finals of the All American Tennis Championships at Amelia Island, Fla.

Chang, ranked 12th in the world, defeated Krickstein, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2, and will meet defending champion Jay Berger, who beat Mal Washington, 6-3, 6-3.

In the women’s semifinal, Kathy Rinaldi defeated Ann Grossman, 3-6, 7-5, 6-0.

Rinaldi, the touring pro from Amelia Island, will meet Amy Frazier, who beat Mary Joe Fernandez, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1, in the other semifinal, in today’s final.

Second-seeded Goran Ivanisevic of Yugoslavia advanced to the semifinals of a $300,000 tournament at Bordeaux, France, beating France’s Fabrice Santoro, 6-2, 6-3.
