Al Del Greco kicked a 42-yard field goal with 25 seconds to play, lifting the Phoenix Cardinals to a 23-21 upset of the Philadelphia Eagles Sunday and giving Joe Bugel his first win as Cardinal coach.

Trailing 21-20 in the last minute, quarterback Timm Rosenbach engineered a 58-yard drive, with the key play a 26-yard pass interference penalty on Ben Smith that took the ball to the Phoenix 44.

Rosenbach scrambled for 13 yards on the next play.

Phoenix was motivated by Rosenbach’s toughness. The second-year quarterback from Washington State ran five times for 50 yards.

Besides the game-winner, Del Greco also made fourth-quarter field goals of 25 and 50 yards. The 50-yarder came with 4:44 left to pull the Cardinals within 21-20.

Eagle defensive tackle Jerome Brown may not be ready to sit down to dinner with Del Greco, but he was impressed.

“We kept thinking, let’s keep them from a touchdown,” Brown said. “I’ll be damned if he didn’t keep on kicking field goals.”

The Eagles blew a 14-0 lead amid boos from home fans. Last week, they lost to their East Division rival, the New York Giants, 27-20.

Philadelphia Coach Buddy Ryan said the loss bothered him less than a knee injury to defensive tackle Mike Pitts that could keep him out three weeks.

Philadelphia sacked Rosenbach six times and intercepted him once.

Trailing 14-0, Phoenix scored its first points under Bugel when Johnny Johnson raced 22 yards with 1:53 left in the first half. The Cardinals were shut out by Washington last week, 31-0.

The Cardinals scored again early in the second half after Tim McDonald intercepted a Cunningham pass. His 38-yard return plus a late-hit penalty on Cunningham put the ball on the six. Three plays later, Anthony Thompson went in from the one.

Cunningham then led Philadelphia on an 89-yard drive culminating in a two-yard scoring pass to Heath Sherman with 1:48 left in the third quarter. That made it 21-14.
