VALLEY ROUNDUP : Matadors Lose 2nd San Diego Match

A 1-0 nonconference loss to the University of San Diego on Sunday left the Cal State Northridge men’s soccer team scoreless for its San Diego trip.

The Matadors began their two-game San Diego set with a 1-0 double-overtime loss to San Diego State on Friday, and their offensive woes continued Sunday.

USD scored the game’s only goal with less than nine minutes remaining in the first half. Forward Paul Gelvezon scored the goal, his sixth of the season, when he headed in a corner kick from midfielder Toby Taitano.

Northridge managed only five shots on goal and had its best chance to tie late in the second half. The Matadors’ Danny Daniels kicked a bullet shot that hit the left goal post square and bounced back from the goal. Granted the reprieve, USD goalie Tom Tate recorded his third shutout of the season.

USD finished with nine shots on Northridge goalies Joel Entrenken and Jason Cherry. Entrenken was removed after receiving a yellow card around the 37th minute of the match. Cherry played the remainder of the match.

Northridge fell to 2-4-1 and 0-2-1 in its last three games. San Diego, tied for fifth in the Western Region coaches’ poll, is 4-0-3.

In another soccer match:

Southern Colorado 5, Occidental 2--Dirk Hogan and Cam McInnis scored second-half goals for visiting Occidental in the nonconference match. Southern Colorado led, 2-0, at halftime.
