THE SIDELINES : Gruber and Doran Get Honors
Toronto’s Kelly Gruber, who batted .464 and drove in 14 runs as the Blue Jays charged back into the American League East race last week, was named AL Player of the Week today.
Bill Doran of the Cincinnati Reds, who batted .588 for the week, was named National League Player of the Week.
Gruber had 13 hits in 28 at-bats, including three doubles and two home runs, helping the Jays narrow Boston’s division lead to one game.
Doran was 10 for 17 during the week, including three doubles and a home run.
