An Oxnard man was killed by a hit-and-run driver while walking across Saviers Road early Sunday, an Oxnard police spokesman said. A witness’s tip led to the arrest of a suspect, police said.

Jesus Hernandez, 28, suffered multiple injuries and was pronounced dead at St. John’s Regional Medical Center after the 12:30 a.m. accident, Deputy Coroner Jim Wingate said.

Hernandez was crossing Saviers Road near Date Street in an area where there is no crosswalk and was struck by a pickup truck, Sgt. Ken Nishihara said.

The driver sped away, Nishihara said, but a witness followed the pickup for a short while before stopping at a pay phone to call police.

Police immediately broadcast a description of the vehicle, and minutes later a California Highway Patrol officer stopped Jose Antonio Mejia in his pickup on the Ventura Freeway at Las Posas Road in Camarillo.

The suspect put up no resistance, Nishihara said.

Mejia, 22, of Oxnard was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and felony hit-and-run and was released on $10,000 bail.
