With starter Mark Rypien sidelined for at least a week because of a sprained knee suffered against the Dallas Cowboys, the Washington Redskins signed Gary Hogeboom as a backup to Stan Humphries. Rypien will undergo exploratory surgery today. Hogeboom, in his 10th season, was cut by the Phoenix Cardinals during training camp.

Quarterback Wade Wilson will be sidelined for at least four weeks because of a torn thumb ligament he suffered against the Chicago Bears, the Minnesota Vikings said. He will undergo surgery today. Rich Gannon, a fourth-year pro who has thrown only 21 passes--none last season--is expected to replace Wade. Former USC and Canadian Football League standout Sean Salisbury is the Vikings’ third-string quarterback.

All-Pro linebacker Lawrence Taylor shouldn’t have been playing when he suffered a hamstring injury in the closing minutes of the New York Giants’ 20-3 victory over the Miami Dolphins, Giant Coach Bill Parcells said. “The early indications are it’s not quite as bad as it looked,” said Parcells, who took the blame for leaving Taylor in the game.
