‘Equal Justice’ in Awarding of Emmys

Re Rick Du Brow’s article, “ ‘Twin Peaks’ Is Way Out of the Academy’s Range” (Sept. 18): Du Brow writes, “Can you believe that David Lynch’s direction of (“Twin Peaks’ ”) classic two-hour pilot actually lost out to an episode of “Equal Justice. . . ?” No one would disagree that “Twin Peaks” is breakthrough television or that Lynch’s directorial vision is innovative. However, Television Academy members also are entitled to their opinions and they’ve voted accordingly.

It seems less than fair that Du Brow slammed this year’s very talented Emmy winners--specifically Thomas Carter for his directorial efforts on behalf of “Equal Justice” and Scott Winant for “thirtysomething”--in order to make a point. While it was the “Promises to Keep” episode for which Carter received his Emmy, a number of critics, including The Times’ Howard Rosenberg, concurred that the pilot for “Equal Justice” (also directed by Carter, who has received many Emmy nominations) was “one of the best series pilots in years.”

Producing a television series is a formidable, costly task and it takes guts, courage and enormous talent to create outstanding television week in and week out.

I doubt that David Lynch or any number of other talented people in television would begrudge Carter or Winant their Emmy Awards.
