Share

Hugo Allan Garcia of Glendale College remained undefeated Friday as the Vaqueros won their third cross-country meet in four outings.

Garcia, a freshman from Guatemala, set a Bakersfield Invitational record of 19 minutes 26 seconds over the four-mile Hart Park course to lead Glendale to an easy win.

The Vaqueros totaled 38 points, 25 ahead of runner-up Bakersfield. Taft (83 points), Pasadena (103) and Long Beach (143) rounded out the top five.

Moorpark, paced by Tricia Mathiesen, won the women’s meet with 41 points. Valley was second with 87, followed by Ventura (112), Glendale (115) and Bakersfield (122).

Mathiesen finished second with a time of 18:25 over the 5,000-meter course. Oxnard’s Gina Paramo, the winner of last week’s WSC meet in Ventura, was the winner in 18:22.

Garcia has been challenged only by his sense of direction this season. Twice he has strayed off course but recovered in time to win in each instance. He had no such problems Friday, winning by 13 seconds.

Teammate Obed Aguirre finished third in 19:50.

Aguirre, last season’s City Section cross-country champion for San Fernando High, appears to be rounding into shape after a slow start this season.

“He’s starting to come around,” Glendale Coach Ed Lopez said. “He’s starting to run like we expected him to.”

Glendale’s other scoring runners were Oscar Perez (sixth in 20:21), Fred Mirzaian (12th in 20:32) and Rick Provenzano (16th in 20:52).
