Aztecs Second in Tournament

San Diego State’s women’s volleyball team took second place Saturday in the Marine Midland Classic at Syracuse University. The Aztecs, ranked 18th by Volleyball Monthly, lost to 16th-ranked Pittsburgh in five games, 15-13, 4-15, 8-15, 15-10, 15-8.

SDSU (10-6) held two leads, 9-3 in the first game and 5-0 in the fourth, before losing to the tournament’s champions. SDSU defeated Syracuse 14-16, 15-8, 15-6, 15-7 in its other game. Point Loma Nazarene college moved to 3-0 in the Golden State Athletic Conference with a 15-4, 15-13, 12-15, 15-3 victory over Westmont at PLNC. Jamie Wheat had 17 kills, Debbie Simpson 15 for PLNC (13-5), while LeeAnn Lopez had 50 assists. Westmont fell to 14-8, 1-3.

University of San Diego fell to Loyola Marymount, 15-8, 15-6, 15-5 in a West Coast Athletic Conference match at USD. LMU improved to 8-9, 1-0. USD is 6-10, 0-2.

United States International (5-12) lost in four games to Cal Poly Pomona, 15-13, 15-5, 13-15, 15-9, in a nonconference match.

Chapman College, ranked 14th in Division II, defeated UC San Diego, ranked first in Division III, 15-10, 7-15, 15-10, 15-12. Liz Vesanovic had 11 kills for UCSD (19-5). Chapman is 13-8.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Nicky Roche scored in the 20th minute to lead USIU (4-4-1) to a 1-0 victory over Cal State Hayward in a nonconference match.

MEN’S SOCCER

Bonita Vista alumnus Steve Cokkinis, a senior, scored three goals to lead host PLNC (3-1, 1-0) to an 8-2 victory over Christ College Irvine (1-8, 0-1) in the Golden State Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

CROSS COUNTRY

PLNC’s men and women each finished second in the small schools division at the 12th UC Riverside Invitational. The Crusader men finished sixth overall while USIU took 19th, USD 20th and SDSU 22nd. PNLC’s Rick Penman was the top local finisher on the five-mile course, taking 11th in 26:01. Sean O’Hara was 22nd (26:12) and Gus Arce 26th (26:19).
