Inglewood police arrested a 22-year-old man Wednesday morning after he allegedly terrorized eight Inglewood housemates when he forced his way into their apartment, robbed them and then raped a teen-ager before abducting her to the rugged hillsides of Hacienda Heights, authorities said.

Omar S. Stephens of Los Angeles was being held without bail on suspicion of rape, kidnaping, robbery, assault and other charges. He was shot in the leg by Inglewood police and bitten by a police dog during his capture, Inglewood Sgt. Harold Moret said.

The teen-ager was treated at a hospital but was not admitted.

The incident began when a gunman robbed a young couple walking home at about 2 a.m. on West Olive Street near downtown Inglewood. The robber took their jewelry but when he discovered they had no money, he forced the 20-year-old man and his 19-year-old wife at gunpoint to lead him to their apartment.

Inside, he found six other people, ages 12 to 23, asleep. After stealing jewelry, he herded the housemates, some of whom were related, into a small bedroom by threatening them with his semiautomatic pistol, police said.

The man took the 19-year-old woman from the group and began fondling her, but the woman persuaded him not to rape her, police said. He returned to the bedroom, picked out an 18-year-old woman and raped her, police said.

When two men held in the bedroom escaped to call police, the gunman fled in his car with the 18-year-old, police said. He drove about 20 miles to Los Robles Park in the unincorporated Hacienda Heights area, where the woman later escaped when the gunman fell asleep, police said.

Authorities arrived when the woman called the Industry sheriff’s station from a nearby home at about 3 a.m. Sheriff’s deputies found asleep found the man asleep in his car, but he escaped by slamming the door of his car on a deputy’s hand as she attempted to arrest him.

Soon afterward, two Inglewood police officers, called to the scene by the Sheriff’s Department, shot at the man when they saw him running in the area but he eluded them as well, police said.

The suspect was arrested at about 8 a.m. by Inglewood police officers in the bedroom of a home on Drybrook Drive in Hacienda Heights. The resident heard an intruder and called police. During his arrest at the home, Stephens was bitten by a police dog, police said.
