Local News in Brief : Chemical Blaze Sends 4 Firefighters to Hospital
A Sun Valley chemical fire Saturday caused $30,000 in damage and resulted in four firefighters undergoing blood tests to determine if they had been injured from inhaling toxic fumes, authorities said.
The fire broke out at about 8:30 a.m. at Flamemaster Corp., a company that manufactures jet accessories at 11120 Sherman Way, said Pat Marek, a spokesman for the Los Angeles city Fire Department. The blaze, which took firefighters about 45 minutes to extinguish, broke out in a highly flammable vat of magnesium dioxide, he said.
“We don’t suspect arson, but we are still investigating the cause,” Marek said.
The four firefighters were taken to Northridge Hospital Medical Center for the tests, the results of which had not yet been determined, he said.
