Jim Harbaugh ended the Chicago Bears’ quarterback controversy with solid play through training camp and the first few weeks of the season.

But when Harbaugh went down with a rib injury Sunday in the second quarter against the Green Bay Packers, Mike Tomczak stepped in and gave a performance that will probably renew the battle for the job.

Tomczak scored a touchdown on a six-yard bootleg, set up 50- and 51-yard field goals by Kevin Butler and tossed a two-yard touchdown pass to Cap Boso during the Bears’ 27-13 victory over the Packers.

The win left the Bears (4-1) in sole possession of first place in the Central Division of the NFC after Tampa Bay’s 14-10 loss to Dallas.

“I hate to enter a game due to an injury, but I had been looking for my shot all year,” said Tomczak, who started 11 games last season. “I don’t know if I’ll be starting next week, but if Jim can’t play, I’ll be more than happy to take the job.”

Harbaugh left the game in the second quarter with the Bears leading, 7-6. He had X-rays taken in the dressing room and was scheduled to have more taken at the hospital.

Tomczak completed nine of 20 passes for 92 yards.

He called his own bootleg play with 1:01 left in the third quarter to give the Bears a 17-6 lead.

“I thought I saw it earlier in the week (in films)” Tomczak said, “and I told Mike (Coach Mike Ditka) if the opportunity came, I’d take it. He told me to go ahead. They sucked into the middle and it was open for me.”

Anderson, who has had rib and knee injuries, gained 141 yards in 21 carries and scored the first touchdown on a three-yard run.

Anderson also had a 52-yard run late in the game that set up Tomczak’s touchdown pass to Boso with three minutes left in the game.

The Bears’ defense held the Packers (2-3) to 237 yards.

Packer quarterback Don Majkowski completed 12 of 39 passes for 211 yards and connected with Sterling Sharpe on a 76-yard touchdown.

“We didn’t execute the passing game as well as we should have,” Packer Coach Lindy Infante said. “Maybe I didn’t call enough running plays.

“We came out in the third quarter and I was trying to take advantage of the wind when we had it. Then the score was such that I thought throwing it was the right answer. They certainly outplayed us.”

Anderson’s touchdown gave the Bears a 7-3 lead.

Chris Jacke kicked his second field goal of the game with 3:19 left in the second quarter to pull the Packers to within 7-6.

Butler connected from 50 yards with 42 seconds left in the half.
