Man Shot to Death in Afternoon Attack

San Diego police were investigating the killing of a man who was shot dead on a city street Tuesday afternoon.

The identity of the victim, who suffered several gunshot wounds to his chest, was not immediately available. He was a Latino in his 30s.

Police said the killing occurred about 3:20 p.m., when a Latino man left a car and approached a group of men sitting on a wall along the 1900 block of K Street. For reasons that remained unclear, the approaching man began firing a handgun at the group, striking the victim, according to police.

The fatally wounded man ran north on 20th Street before collapsing. Paramedics took him to UC San Diego Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The assailant entered a vehicle and drove away, police said. There was no word on the motive.
