National Hardcourt Event Scheduled at Westlake Club

More than 150 players will compete in the U. S. Tennis Assn. National men’s 50-55 hardcourt championships beginning Monday at Westlake Tennis and Swim Club in Westlake Village.

The tournament, which is open to the public at no charge, starts Monday at 1:30 p.m. and will continue through Oct. 21.

Top-seeded players in the age 50-and-older singles division include Len Saputo (Walnut Creek, Calif.), Bob Duesler (Newport Beach) and David Weber (Omaha). Top-seeded players in the age 55-and-older division are Gordon Davis (Encino), Paul Cranis (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Leonard Lindborg (South Laguna).

Pancho Gonzalez and Alex Olmedo are featured in the 50-and-older doubles division and are seeded seventh.

The San Fernando Valley chapter of the National Football Foundation announced that high school football standouts Ron Adelman (Calabasas), Eric Arciniega (Burroughs), Tony Cesta (Bell-Jeff) and Jay Sumner (Burbank) have been selected players of the week by the coaches at their respective schools.

Each week, the foundation chooses a different group of schools from the 51 in the chapter’s area, and coaches select their team’s best player. Each school in the San Fernando Valley area will have a player honored by season’s end.

The Valley chapter will hold an open-house meeting Oct. 25 at 6 p.m. at 16235 Barneston St., Granada Hills.

The meeting is open to anyone interested in high school football.

The Los Angeles Maccabee Athletic Club boys’ basketball team, made up of 15- to 16-year-olds, will play the North Hollywood Youth All-Stars on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Forum before the Lakers’ game against Maccabi Tel Aviv.
