Ty Detmer threw four touchdowns passes and set an NCAA record with his 13th consecutive game of at least 300 yards total offense as No. 13 Brigham Young routed Colorado State, 52-9, Saturday in a Western Athletic Conference game at Provo, Utah.

Detmer, who was taken out early in the fourth quarter, completed 26 of 38 passes for 316 yards with three interceptions. His total offense streak broke the previous record of 12 set by Jim McMahon of Brigham Young in 1981.

Detmer reached 300 yards in total offense for the 18th time in his career, tying the NCAA record set by Steve Young of BYU.

The Cougars, 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the WAC, took a 31-0 lead in the second quarter and coasted the rest of the way. Peter Tuipulotu ran for two touchdowns and gained 63 yards in eight carries as the Cougars gained 197 yards on the ground, well above their 90-yard average.

“I’m sure they thought we were going to come out throwing and we spread them out and blew out some big holes,” Detmer said.

Brigham Young intercepted five passes and held the Rams to 46 yards rushing.

“I was pleased we were able to contain their running attack,” Brigham Young Coach LaVell Edwards said. “(It’s) something we’ve been working on really pretty much all year long.”

The Rams (4-3, 3-1) have lost four consecutive games to Brigham Young since beating the Cougars, 24-20, in 1986.

“We got a good old tail-kicking,” Colorado State Coach Earle Bruce said. “They dominated the game from start to finish.”

No. 23 Wyoming 25, New Mexico 22--Sean Fleming kicked a 35-yard field goal with 2:07 left to give the Cowboys the victory in a WAC game at Laramie, Wyo.

New Mexico (2-5, 1-1) trailed 14-12 at halftime but took the lead early in the third quarter on David Margolis’ 43-yard field goal. Nate Morris increased the lead to 22-14 late in the quarter when he intercepted a pass by Tom Corontzos and returned it 56 yards for a touchdown.

Wyoming (7-0, 4-0) couldn’t muster any offense in the fourth quarter until Robert Rivers returned a punt 61 yards to New Mexico’s two. Jay Daffer ran the ball in, pulling Wyoming to 22-20, and Corontzos hit Shawn Wiggins for a game-tying, two-point conversion.

Texas El Paso 12, Hawaii 10--Jason Gillespie’s fourth field goal of the night, a 20-yarder with 2:14 remaining, gave the Miners a (3-4, 1-3) victory over the Rainbows (2-3, 1-2) in a WAC game at El Paso.

Gillespie missed a 51-yarder in the second quarter and never got a chance at a 44-yarder because holder Mike Perez fumbled the snap.
