Antelope Valley’s Miller Honored by Foothill Conference

Steve Miller of Antelope Valley College has been selected Foothill Conference offensive player of the week.

Miller, a sophomore tailback from Las Vegas Clark High, gained 223 yards in 16 carries and scored two touchdowns in the Marauders’ 43-7 victory over East Los Angeles on Saturday night.

Marco Arcipreste of Glendale College has been honored as the Western State Conference co-offensive player of the week.

The sophomore quarterback from Burroughs High completed 16 of 24 passes for 207 yards and a touchdown in the Vaqueros’ 35-22 victory over Pierce on Saturday night. He also rushed for two touchdowns.

The San Fernando Valley chapter of the National Football Foundation has announced that eight high school players have been selected players of the week by coaches at their respective schools.

The selections are running back Terry Barnum of Alemany, receiver-defensive back Krikor Kerkonian of North Hollywood, quarterback Mike Stern of Oak Park, quarterback Kris Kershaw of Antelope Valley Christian, fullback-linebacker Jason Schwaiger of Crescenta Valley, receiver Stan McQuay of Canoga Park, linebacker Scott Blade of Canyon and two-way lineman Mike Wamsganz of Cleveland.

Cal State Northridge is ranked 13th in this week’s NCAA Division II football poll. The Matadors moved up two notches with a 34-24 victory over Southern Utah State in Cedar City, Utah, on Saturday.

Northridge, which will play host to Cal State Sacramento in a 7 p.m. game Saturday at North Campus Stadium, has won five in a row since opening with a loss at Northern Arizona.

Despite allowing 204 rushing yards against Southern Utah State, Northridge is 10th among Division II teams in rushing defense. The Matadors allow an average of 96.5 yards a game.

Anthony Nicholson will replace Jason Ferguson in the Northridge starting lineup at fullback, Coach Bob Burt said Tuesday.

Nicholson, a 5-foot-9, 212-pound junior, rushed for 136 yards in 19 carries against Southern Utah State in his first start of the season. Ferguson, a 5-9, 190-pound senior, did not make the trip because of a sprained right ankle.

Ferguson is excepted to play in a reserve role against Sacramento.

Victoria Herazo of Newhall set a U. S. record in The Athletics Congress one-hour National Racewalking Championship for women Sunday in Cambridge, Mass.

Herazo walked 12,325 meters (7.66 miles) in one hour to better her national record of 12,051 meters set in 1988. She finished first in a field of 42 in a race in MIT’s Steinbrenner Stadium and lapped second-place finisher Susan Liers twice.
