TENNIS ROUNDUP : Krickstein, Wilander Advance in France
Top-seeded Aaron Krickstein and Sweden’s Mats Wilander advanced to the quarterfinals of the Lyon Grand Prix tournament Thursday at Lyon, France.
Krickstein eliminated Christian Bergstrom of Sweden, 6-4, 6-3, and faces Alexander Mronz of Germany today. Wilander defeated Gilad Bloom of Israel, 6-2, 6-2, and faces third-seeded Jonas Svensson.
Top-seeded Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia breezed to a 6-0, 6-3 victory over South Korean Kim Bong Soo for his second victory in preliminary play at the Marlboro championships at Hong Kong.
In the same group as Lendl, Kevin Curren defeated Kelly Evernden of New Zealand, 6-4, 6-4, for his first victory.
Top-seeded Gabriela Sabatini reached the quarterfinals of the Porsche Cup tournament at Filderstadt, Germany, by beating fellow Argentine Mercedes Paz, 6-2, 6-2.
John McEnroe had more trouble than expected but defeated unseeded Udo Riglewski of Germany, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-3, to reach the quarterfinals of the ATP CA Tennis Trophy at Vienna.
Israel’s Amos Mansdorf upset second-seeded Andres Gomez of Ecuador, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6), in the $1.1-million European Community tournament at Antwerp, Belgium.
