Howard Schnellenberger called it the biggest victory of his six-year tenure at Louisville.

And no one was disputing Schnellenberger’s claim after the Cardinals, off to their best start in 19 years, upset Pittsburgh, 27-20, Saturday at Pittsburgh.

Browning Nagle, who suffered a twisted ankle, twisted knee and separated shoulder in the first half, connected with Ken McKay on a seven-yard touchdown pass play in the third quarter as Louisville (6-1-1) moved closer to its first bowl bid since 1977.

The Cardinals’ start is their best since they went 9-1 in 1972.

Pitt quarterback Alex Van Pelt threw touchdown passes of five and seven yards to fullback Ronald Redmon in a seven-minute span of the fourth quarter. But Louisville, which led 27-6 with 13:45 left, held on for its first victory over Pitt in the five-game series.

The Cardinals also jeopardized Pitt’s chances for a winning season. The Panthers (3-3-1) play Miami and Notre Dame in their next two games and face Penn State next month.

Penn State 40, Boston College 21--Third-string running back Shelly Hammonds rushed for 208 yards in 24 carries at Newton, Mass., as the Nittany Lions (4-2) earned their seventh consecutive victory over the Eagles (3-3).

Hammonds entered the game in the second quarter, replacing Gary Brown, who was playing in place of injured regular Leroy Thompson. He broke a tie with a 65-yard run at the outset of the second half and then added an insurance touchdown on a 48-yard run with less than 2:30 minutes left.

Boston College quarterback Glenn Foley passed for three touchdowns, but the Nittany Lions held the Eagles to minus four yards rushing.

Syracuse 42, Rutgers 0--Quarterback Mark McDonald, playing for the injured Marvin Graves, ran for one touchdown and passed for another to lead the Orangemen (3-2-2) over the Scarlet Knights (2-5) at Syracuse, N.Y.

McDonald completed 16 of 20 passes for 168 yards and rushed for another 46 as Syracuse recorded its first shutout since 1988 when the Orangemen beat Virginia Tech, 35-0, in the third game of the season.

Mike Mayweather led the Cadets with 109 yards in 18 carries.

Temple 31, Virginia Tech 28--Matt Baker connected with Kevin McCoy on a 15-yard touchdown pass play with 1:51 left at Philadelphia to give the Owls (3-3) a dramatic comeback victory over the Hokies (3-4).

Baker completed 23 of 35 passes--including his final nine attempts--for 270 yards.

Harvard 23, Princeton 20--Scott Johnson kicked a 34-yard field goal with 55 seconds left to give the Crimson (4-2, 2-1) the Ivy League victory over the Tigers (2-4, 1-2) at Princeton, N.J.
