Running back Tony Williams scored on a one-yard run with 30 seconds remaining to give the formerly winless Ventura Pirates a come-from-behind upset, 46-45, over Santa Barbara City College on Saturday night.
Host Santa Barbara (3-4, 2-4 in Western State Conference play) held a 45-31 lead with 4:45 remaining in the game when a snap sailed over the head of Vaquero punter George Rios and rolled 60 yards to the Santa Barbara one-yard line where it was recovered by Ventura’s Mike Flores.
Williams scored on a one-yard dive two plays later and quarterback Brent Albrent tossed a two-point conversion pass to Chris Thomas to cut the Santa Barbara lead to 45-39.
Williams scored four times for Ventura (1-6, 1-5) and gained 222 yards in 32 carries.
Albrent completed 14 of 27 passes for 142 yards and a touchdown.
